Let’s Celebrate Oktoberfest Together!
If you didn’t already know, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival (Volksfest). Since 1810, and each year since the city of Munich in Germany hosts this tremendous event. During the 16 days, revelers flock to the very same 103 acres Theresienwiese (Theresa’s Meadow), where the first celebration began. It typically goes from the third week of September to the first Sunday in October.
The first occasion was to commemorate the October 12th, 1810 marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. Whew! That is a mouthful. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the original festivities, which lasted over five days.
A Celebration of Beer and Brats
Well, some things have changed since this original wedding celebration. The event has grown exponentially and is one of the most popular festivals in Europe, and perhaps the world. In just over a two-week span, the party attracts over 6 million people who together consume over 1.5 million gallons of beer. In addition, they feast on over 400,000 pork sausages and 480,000 split roasted chickens. Altogether, the festival brings in over 450 million Euros into Munich’s city pockets. Also, a fun fact to tell your friends for over the past 200 years, Oktoberfest has only been canceled 24 times.
